Northside 4x4 Adventures, Poverty Creek Camp grounds

A last-minute decision seen us head up to Bribie on Friday arvo to spend 2 nights at Poverty Creek campgrounds with a few other happy campers. The access track into the campgrounds is accessible with a camp trailer but not with a caravan in tow so we had to tent it this time out which was an experience in itself, but we will touch on that later.

The campgrounds are situated on the passage side and towards the northern point of the island through Banksia Beach and White Patch. You can also access the camp ground from the inland track, when it is open, which unfortunately isn’t meant to be until June this year.

Linc and Lil went ahead while we made sure the puppies were settled in with the in-laws and got fueled up for the weekend. Not long up the road and Linc phoned through while we were on the highway to let us know the access track was pretty sandy with deep ruts and to make sure we dropped our tyre pressures just to be safe.

We got to the parking area before the access track at around 5:20 and started to air down. As we were doing this a Subaru Wagon rolled in, stopped at the access track and continued on to the track. I said to the missus, I’m gunna have to pull this bloke out aren’t I (with a few expletives along the lines of F me and what a DH), anyway not even 300m into the access track we round the corner and guess who was stuck. I didn’t have any recovery gear as I didn’t think I would need it and this bloke had what looked like a rope from a swing set or an over sized dog lead. Anyway long story short, we had to tow him almost all the way to the camping area. By this time the light was gone and we had to set up camp in the dark, lucky Lincoln had his Aldi Camp light which made it easier to see. The fire was lit, and the camp stoves gassed up and dinner was underway.

As we were camped on the passage side it was inevitable that we wet a line, without any luck I might add, but we wet a line none the less.

It was an uneventful weekend away apart from the air mattress going down through the night and me and missus having to pump it back up at 2am and it going down again within the hour. So we had a rough night to say the least. We headed into Bribie the next morning to find a new airbed, and on our way out you’ll never guess who we came upon on the access track, Mr Subaru and his draggin wagon, he was literally driving in the trees, in the gully off the side of the track to get out, extreme rally style. We were having a little chuckle over the airways so as I came past him, I gave him a hit from the air horns, well must of scared him as he stopped solid and couldn’t go any further. Next thing I hear a “He’s Fk’d” over the 2way and Linc was on tow duty to get him out. Linc towed him most of the way with his swing set rope, unhooked and headed off, not even 50m up the track he was stuck again. We weren’t turning around this time as there was others coming past that could help. So we headed out to air up.

We finally got into Bribie and got another airbed thankfully, I can’t recommend the guys at Camping, Fishing, Prospecting on first Ave at Bongaree enough for their friendly service and for helping us out of what would of been a very uncomfortable night.

Sunday came around to quick and it was time to pull up camp and it was still early so we decided to hit beach side of Bribie. We meet up with a couple more Adventurers and once we were on the beach we headed up to the old Forts now they have opened the beach back up. There’s a lot of history in these forts and it would be a shame to see them knocked down because of a safety issue. The beach was not as busy as I thought it would have been for a Sunday, which made it an easy entry and exit on the beach access track.

All in all a great weekend spent with my youngest son, his GF and her brothers. The sunsets were to die for and just the fact that we were out in the Aussie country side made it an awesome weekend. The only down side was the midge’s so make sure you pack plenty of Aerogard. Although there is heaps of old timber laying about your not allowed to use it so bringing in your own firewood is a must, if your gunna have a fire. Lots of wildlife around, including kangaroos, lots of goanna’s at sunset and sunrise and of course bin chickens, there’s always bin chickens.

So I guess if your looking for a close, unpowered camping area that you could access with a camper trailer, that has toilets and COLD showers, is only a 5-10min drive to a Woolies at Banksia Beach, fish and chip shop and bottle shop and you don’t mind battling with the midge’s (they did slow down after a while) and is 15-20min drive to Beach side Bribie Island then Poverty Creek Camping is for you.

Until next time remember, “when the blacktop ends, the Adventure begins”

Cheers Rusty.
